The War of the Spanish Succession

Outside the church of the Convent de Sant Agustí in Felanitx one is suddenly surprised by being confronted by what looks like an upturned canon. What the heck is that? It turns out that this is indeed a canon, one which had been used in a battle 300 years ago today, in Calonge, of all places. Apparently, a battle was fought there in 1715, called the Batalla del Camp d’en Romaguera, as part of the Guerra de Successió Espanyola (War of the Spanish Succession). Two days earlier, on June 15th, a fleet under Claude François Bidal d’Asfeld had landed in Cala Llonga with French soldiers fighting for the Casa de Borbón. Anyway, the canon was abandoned after the battle’s end and was put where it is seen now, for evermore. The House of Bourbon has ruled Spain, and Mallorca, ever since. And Felanitx with it. Blimey.
